How to store bread & smart ways to use stale bread

Bread is an essential item for many nationalities, thus the orders many times of bread onboard may sometimes be extensive, even though bread has a short shelf-life and might end up expired onboard.

Thus, proper bread management without deteriorating its quality is very important.

HOW TO STORE BREAD
Proper sealing and storage, as well as using the refrigerator or freezer when needed, can help prevent mold and increase shelf life.

  • Packed bread should be stored in an airtight container. Often it is best to just keep it in the plastic bag it came with. The bread should be kept in a cool dry place; room temperature is ok. In this way the bread will last for 5-7 days.
  • To preserve bread/bread dough in the fridge or freezer, it should be stored in an airtight container such as the plastic bag with twist-ties that the bread came in, a freezer safe plastic bag, or a container with an air-tight lid.
  • Hard-crusted bread may tear plastic bags and film, so consider double-bagging.
  • In case it needed to last longer or in case the consumption is slow, it is necessary to freeze the bread.
  • When freezing the bread post a label that states (the date and the expiration date 3-6 months ahead) without covering the label with the product’s expiration date.
  • Sliced bread can be stored in the freezer for 3-6 months. The bread must be placed in the freezer before the number of days shown for refrigerator storage has elapsed.
  • The bread is best defrosted without the wrapping and at a cool room temperature. After defrosting it should be wrapped in plastic or in an airtight container but consumed within 2-3 days.
