Intertanko and Intercargo advise on Increased Security Threats for vessels operating in the Gulf of Guinea.

Several attacks have occurred targeting tankers, with one resulting in a seafarer being kidnapped whilst loading alongside.

Following these attacks, the industry - consisting of the Round Table plus OCIMF - has agreed on a guidance document. Of particular importance is following the guidance laid out in the BMP West Africa and the reporting requirements contained within.

The industry groups continue to work closely with the Nigerian leadership and hold monthly meetings. The outcome of those meetings has led to the increased activity of the Nigerian Navy and the implementation of the Deep Blue project.

It is expected that with these deployments, the security situation in the Gulf of Guinea will improve. In any event, all ships should take note of the industry guidance and keep a very close watch when operating in the Gulf of Guinea.
