Vessels warned of subsea damage risks when anchoring near Hong Kong

Vessels anchoring near the approaches to Hong Kong are alerted to the risks of damaging subsea pipelines and cables.

Attention is drawn in particular to the South East approaches due to the large volume of subsea cables and pipelines in the region, some of which are not clear on all Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC). It is understood that not all cables and lines are marked fully from origin to termination by the hydrographic office and only show in the busy traffic areas.

In some cases, vessels have been called by the owing cable companies requesting that the vessel changes their anchoring location. It is also understood that companies may attempt to blame such vessels for pre-existing cable damage.

Vessels intending to anchor in this region should consider designated anchorages only.
