EU and Mediterranean countries propose a Med SECA

Intertanko haspreviously reported on the movement within the EU towards designating the whole of the Mediterranean area as a SOx Emission Control Area (SECA).

ADS Insight has provided a pre-copy of a recent submission to MEPC 78 by the EU and all countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, proposing that the Med Sea becomes a SECA on 1 January 2025.

The chart and the boundaries of the proposed Med SECA are as presented below.

Subject: INDONESIAN NAVAL ARRESTS OF COMMERCIAL VESSELS EAST OF SINGAPORE

The Republic of the Marshall Islands Maritime Administrator (the “Administrator”) has noted an increase in arrests of ships in Indonesian waters. The arrests are primarily occurring in an area located to the east of the Singapore Straits and Indonesian landmass to the east. All vessels arrested were considered to be loitering by the local Indonesian naval authority. Loitering can apply to anchoring, drifting, engine repairs, fishing, survey work, and any other reason for a vessel to be in a particular area.
