Maritime Risk Focus: Asbestos at sea-An unexpected problem

The time is up for the owners of any ships calling at EU ports or anchorages to arrange surveys, required by the EU Ship Recycling Regulation, to identify if hazardous materials including asbestos, are present on board. Will such surveys lead to an unwelcome and unexpected surprise with asbestos estimated to be present on a significant number of ships? Can owners be confident of relying on certification that the vessel is "asbestos free" when built? The answer for some owners may unfortunately be no.

New CIC on Stability in General announced

A new Concentrated Inspection Campaign (CIC) on Stability in General has been announced jointly by several MoUs (Paris MoU, Tokyo MoU, Black Sea MoU, Indian MoU, Mediterranean, Riyadh and Vina del Mar MoUs), commencing from 1 September 2021 and ending 30 November 2021.

The aim and scope of this CIC is to ensure that stability systems onboard are installed, available and approved. In addition, that stability calculations for each voyage are carried out and documented adequately. As such, Master and responsible officers will be checked for familiarization and their knowledge of the loading systems provided on board, the use of stability software and documentation.

Spain detains tanker for dumping oil off Canary Islands

MADRID, June 17 (Reuters) - Spain has detained a tanker ship for illegally dumping fuel in waters off the Canary Islands and creating a 55-square km (21 square miles) oil spill, the Transport Ministry said.
