
- Adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the Mediterranean Sea Emission Control Area for Sulphur Oxides and Particulate Matter (Med SOx ECA) is set to come into effect on 1 May 2025.
- The adoption by IMO is the upshot of a successful multilateral process stewarded by the Mediterranean Action Plan of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP/MAP), which saw the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention forge consensus and submit a coordinated proposal to the UN specialized agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships.

A New Orleans court has found chief engineer Warlito Tan not guilty of four felony counts including pollution and obstruction of justice.
It is a rare win for a defendant in a US pollution case, and one in which federal judges rejected some of the prosecutors’ requests for subpoenas of crew members as “unreasonable and oppressive”.
Between 1 May and 17 June 2022, AMSA conducted a focused inspection campaign on hours of work and rest. The results of the campaign were positive and showed general compliance with the work and rest requirements. Most of the inspections conducted during this period, resulted in no hours of work and rest related deficiencies.
